Re: [OS:N:] Re: k12 and red hat

There has been a lot talk about problems with RHN,
but I use RH at work and got tired of many RH only
features and so went to SuSe at home. I have now
bought the last 4 releases, all at discounts, and am very
happy. I like their Yast2 setup tools, far easier to use
than RH tools. Their 7 CD's or 1 DVD make loading very
easy, and I have never not found a program I wanted
on the release - while often I have to go out to the
internet to find items for RH.

SuSe also has a free update site that works thru Yast2.
I have used it many times without problems, even over
a slow network. It is very friendly, allowing me to select
which updates I need and skip the ones I rather not have.

A major problem I have had with RH 8.0, is loading older
systems. In fact my system at work crashes if I use
the new boot disks on it. SuSe has provided more boot
disks and documented how to work with older systems.
RH seems to ignore the older systems which is not good
for schools - which are more likely not to have the newest
CPUs. I believe they no longer provide 386 kernels,
only 586 and above.

Bill.
